Collection: Lock Troubleshooting
The procedure for dialing a Sargent & Greenleaf Standard Mechanical Lock:
1. Turn the dial left (counterclockwise), stopping the fourth
time the first number of the combination aligns with the
opening index.
2. Turn the dial to the right (clockwise), stopping the third
time the second number of the combination aligns with the
opening index.
3. Turn the dial to the left (counterclockwise), stopping the
second time the third number of the combination aligns
with the opening index.
4. Turn the dial to the right. Some resistance should be felt
as the mark representing “5” comes under the opening
index, and the dial should reach a positive stop near “95.”
The lock is now open, You may now turn the handle and open your safe.
During the dialing process, it is normal to feel more resistance
each time the dial is turned a complete revolution. Each turn
of the dial engages another part of the mechanism, creating
more resistance to dialing.
Troubleshooting a Mechanical Combination Lock
The combination lock on your safe conforms to the requirements of Underwriters Laboratories Group 2 Combination Lock Specifications. This assures that you have a highly tested and secure lock.
UL specifies that the combination should not open if the numbers are dialed more than 1 numbers from that set by the manufacturer or user. This makes it difficult for unauthorized people to open the lock.
This also means that if the combination is not “centered” in this tight range, the lock will not open or will open only occasionally.
Please attempt the below procedure if you are experiencing trouble with your combination:
- Dial all the first three numbers on the combination one number higher, and if this does not work, one number lower. Fore example, if the combination is 20-40-60-87, try 21-41-61-87. If this does not work, try 19-39-59-87.
- It may be that only one number is slightly off the provided combination. Based on the sample combination of 20-40-60, try one number at a time higher or lower. For example:
21-40-60
19-40-60
20-41-60
20-39-60
20-40-61
20-40-59
- Dial the combination by adding one number to the first number, subtracting one from the second number, and adding one to the third number. If this does not work, try the same procedure but use 2 numbers.
One of the above approaches should work. Please change the appropriate number(s) on the combination card, and the lock should continue to work properly from then on.
